Elderly couple kicked out of McDonald's for using allotted time

CULPEPER, Va. -

An elderly couple was kicked out of their area McDonald's two weeks ago because they had been there for 30 minutes.

Barbara Becker, 81, and Carl Becker, 87, had been visiting the Culpeper McDonald's three to four times a week for years, ABC affiliate WJLA reported.

However, one day during their usual afternoon break, the manager asked the Beckers to leave the half-empty restaurant.  They hadn't even finished eating.

"He said, 'You two need to leave now because your half-hour is up, and we need to clean this floor,'" Barbara told WJLA.

The pair left the restaurant but sent a letter to the editor of the local paper.

"I've never had an experience like that in my life," Carl said.

Ron Frazier, a Culpeper resident who has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years, was angered by how the elderly couple was treated.

"If the place was full and they needed the seating, but just to mop the floors? It was really rude," he told WJLA.

The owner of the franchise, Bob Drumheller, told the Culpeper Star-Exponent, a local newspaper, "I care deeply about the comfort and satisfaction of my customers.  My organization takes these matters seriously, and is investigating the customer's claim."

The couple hasn't received an apology.

"It's so absolutely insulting that you have to leave, and the man behind us is laughing," Barbara said.

The Beckers love McDonald's, but say they will never return to the Culpeper location.

The pair, however, has a new place to eat now.

Shawn's Smokehouse Barbecue heard their story and decided to give the Beckers a free lunch every week.  The restaurant is also offering free afternoon coffee for seniors.
