CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

Two Montgomery County attorneys face extortion charges following a two-year investigation into allegations they tried to force a client to pay them an additional $50,000 for services.

Well-known defense attorney Fletcher Long, 45, and his colleague, Carrie Gasaway, 43, were indicted on one count each of extortion.  They surrendered at the Montgomery County jail and were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began investigating the pair in February of 2012.

According to a release, the victim advised she sought legal services from Gasaway in October 2010 to read her father's will. An initial fee was agreed upon by both parties.

After the will reading, Gasaway requested the victim sign a contract for an additional $50,000.

When the victim refused, the TBI said Long joined Gasaway in making continued demands for the additional payment and later obtained a warrant for her arrest.

The case was presented to a Montgomery County grand jury, which returned the indictments last week.

In a statement released late Wednesday, Gasaway said she was disappointed and anxious to get the issue resolved, adding, "I hope that this issue does not cast a shadow over the great work my current law firm continues to do. I ask that everyone respect the privacy of my associates, my staff and especially my family as we move forward to clear up this legal issue. This matter will not affect the work that I do. For over 16 years I have fought tirelessly on behalf of my clients. I will continue to do so while my team of attorneys work to see that I am acquitted."

The TBI said the investigation is active and ongoing.

Long, who is the attorney for Vanderbilt rape suspect Brandon Vandenburg, was arrested late last year on harassment charges.
