An east Tennessee animal shelter was forced to euthanize around 30 dogs after a distemper outbreak.

Our sister station WATE-TV reports the Oak Ridge police say a puppy adopted from the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter got sick and was brought back to the facility.

Tests showed the dog had distemper.

Several other dogs at the shelter were showing the same symptoms and the majority tested positive for the disease.

Police reported that's when 28 to 30 dogs had to be euthanized over the weekend.

Employees at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter are working hard to sanitize the facility.  They expect to remain closed until Thursday.

Anyone who recently adopted a dog from the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter that is showing signs of distemper should contact the shelter immediately.

Call 865-425-3423 during business hours or call 865-425-4399 after hours.
