NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A man died after police say he was lying on railroad tracks in the Gulch area of Nashville and was run over Tuesday night.

It happened just after 8:30 p.m. near 10th Avenue North and Charlotte Avenue.

The victim, Robert Turner, 53, suffered severe injuries to his lower legs.  He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Police said the train's conductor realized someone was on the tracks and immediately hit the brakes, but was unable to stop the train before striking the man.

Authorities said the train was traveling 5 mph or less at the time of the accident.

CSX Corporation told News 2 the train was heading to Cincinnati, Ohio from Birmingham, Alabama.  It was carrying two locomotives and 70 railcars.

The train continued on its route after police finished their investigation.

Police said Turner was homeless and there was no evidence of foul play at the scene.
