Budget meetings continue for upcoming school year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro school officials and Metro Council had the second of preliminary discussions late Monday afternoon about next year's Metro Schools budget.

It added more detail on some of the factors that could lead to an increase in the proposal for the coming year over last year's $746 million school budget.

The first meeting indicated a potential $38 million increase.

In a document released to the Metro Council Budget and Finance Committee, school officials cited about $2.5 million as Metro's portion of the teacher salary increase proposed by Governor Bill Haslam.

They also indicated that a proposal to expand Metro's Pre-K budget would add about $3 million to the proposed budget.

Factors that could decrease the school budget include fewer charter school students than expected and more teachers and staff taking advantage or earlier retirement.

School officials say they will have more firm numbers on the school budget during a meeting next Tuesday.
