NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Police arrested a woman early Sunday morning for striking a golf cart with her car and later trying to bribe the officer who arrested her.

The incident began at the intersection of First Avenue North and Broadway in downtown Nashville.

According to an affidavit, Janice Merrick was stopped at a red light behind the golf cart when she began honking continuously before driving her car into the vehicle.

An officer in the area witnessed the ordeal and asked Merrick, 59, to step out of her car.

According to the report, Merrick smelled of alcohol, had red, watery eyes and slurred speech.  She was unsteady on her feet and failed field sobriety tests.

She stated she had three beers but later added she had two glasses of wine, the report stated.

Merrick refused to take a Breathalyzer and was taken to a local hospital where she tried to bribe the officer.

According to the affidavit, Merrick stated she knows better than to drive drunk, having worked for the federal government for 35 years, but "deserves a break."

She offered $500 to the officer to take her home instead of jail.

There were two people in the golf cart Merrick hit.  One occupant complained of back pain and planned to go to the hospital to get checked out.  The other occupant was not seriously injured.

Merrick told police the occupants were "making a big deal out of nothing," adding that police should "go after real criminals."

Merrick was charged with DUI and bribing an officer and booked into the Metro jail. She has since been released.
