2 rescued from balcony after apartment catches fire

Two people were rescued from their balcony after their apartment caught fire in Murfreesboro Sunday night.

Fire crews responded to the Woods at Greenland in the 900 block of Greenland Drive just after 7 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming out of a third floor apartment.

The two residents went to the balcony after they were unable to leave through the apartment to escape.

Firefighters set up a ladder to guide the residents down, one by one, with crews nearby to spot them from below.

Neither was injured nor needed medical treatment.

Once inside, fire officials said heavy flames were coming from the kitchen.  The sprinkler system activated, but was not reaching the fire.

The damage was contained to the kitchen, but the rest of the apartment sustained smoke damage.

Water damage from the sprinkler system affected both units below the residence.

Officials reported unattended cooking seems to be the cause.
