Rutherford County Schools mourning loss of school board member

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

Rutherford County Schools are mourning the loss of a school board member.

Helen Blankenship, 45, passed away on March 5 at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

She was elected to the Rutherford County Board of Education in August 2012. Prior to her membership, Blankenship was a substitute teacher with the Murfreesboro City, Rutherford County and Cannon County school systems.

Blankenship was known for her dedication and pride for her community.

"Helen was dedicated to ensuring Rutherford County students received strong academic opportunities. She was especially supportive of Career and Technical Education offerings," Director of Schools Don Odom said in a release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends."

The visitation will be held on Saturday, March 8 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Jennings & Ayers Funeral Home in Murfreesboro. The funeral will begin at 6:30 p.m.
