10 puppies rescued from bin on side of highway

Ten puppies crammed into a Rubbermaid bin were rescued from a Missouri highway Wednesday night.

KCTV reports a man was driving down Interstate 435 in Kansas City when he noticed the bin and stopped to check it out.

Inside, he found ten little puppies barely four or five weeks old.

The man then took the puppies to KC Pet Project, a local shelter.

Tori Fugate told the news station that people drop off puppies all the time, but rarely are they abandoned on the side of a major highway.

Since they're so young, the puppies can barely walk, let alone survive on their own.

Fugate said they are lucky to be alive.

"Today was a little warmer, but had it been a couple of days ago, those puppies might not have made it much past the time they were out there," she explained.

Five of the puppies have been moved into foster homes where they'll stay for about a month, preparing them to be adopted.

Anyone who wishes to donate to the shelter to help with the abandoned puppies veterinary care can visit their Web site at KCPetProject.org.
