Hero dog shot twice protecting family from intruders

A dog is being hailed a hero across the nation after she was shot while protecting her owners last Saturday.

According to KABC-TV, Charlie and two of her canine siblings chased after intruders when they broke into her Los Angeles home.

One of the intruders then fired four shots at the dogs as he ran off, two of which struck Charlie in her front and back right legs.

One of Charlie's canine siblings even tried to push Charlie back into the house after she was left injured.

The owner reported that if Charlie had not been there, the bullets would have struck one of the owner's children.

The family, however, could not afford Charlie's necessary medical treatment.  They were forced to surrender their life-saving pet to North Central Shelter so she could receive the care she needed.

The shelter then made a call to action, sharing Charlie's story on Facebook and setting up a donation page on YouCaring.com.

The campaign has since raised over $8,200, double the original goal of $4,000.

Charlie finally underwent surgery, which unfortunately led to the amputation of one of her front legs.

Soon after, she was reunited with her family and continues to recover back at home.
