MT. JULIET, Tenn. -

A Mt. Juliet man has been reunited with his high school class ring 25 years after he last saw it thousands of miles away in Naples, Italy.

John C. Sims, a 1981 graduate of Miami Beach Senior High School in Florida who now lives in Tennessee, thought he'd never see his class ring again.

That was until this week when a family used the Internet to track down the ring's rightful owner.

Sims, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, left his ring in a softball glove back in 1989 on a sweaty day in Italy while on liberty from his assignment aboard the USS Forrestal.

Somehow, the glove, part of the recreation equipment provided for Navy personnel, wound up in the hands of a Navy family in Norfolk, Virginia.

Twenty years after the ring was found in the Pickens family home, they reached out to an alumni activist from Miami Beach H.S. to track Sims down.

When he checked his Facebook page and saw a picture of the ring, he knew right away it belonged to him.

"Facebook wasn't around back when all this happened," Sims told News 2. "Social media made all this happen."

The ring was shipped overnight and arrived Thursday.

"I was just so glad that someone was honest enough to contact me and get my ring back to me," Sims said.

His name is still engraved in the band.
