Company under scrutiny after blast sends rock sailing into home

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A blasting company is under state scrutiny after a dynamite explosion went wrong in Bellevue last week.

The incident sent a massive rock into a nearby town home, blowing out two windows, breaking  a home's wood siding and damaging an air conditioner last Thursday.

Investigators with the state fire marshal's office said the Rutherford County blasting crew was building a new town home off Old Hickory Boulevard when they detonated a shot that was not properly matted.

They also said the rock was the size of a small tire.

Nearby resident Carrie Jeffries was at home at the time of the blasting mishap.

"I did feel it rock the house," Jeffries recalled. "It was like a minor tremor."

According to the state fire marshal's office, the blasting company had two prior state violations and has been shut down since last week's incident.

Officials said the company must submit a plan of corrective action that must be approved by the state before re-opening for business.

An official with the blasting company told News 2 by phone the incident was "a pure accident."

Jeffries, however, said, "I'm not too impressed with them because if they are supposed to be professionals, should they have known that would fly toward the house and cause a problem."

Residents said last week's incident is the second mishap to occur at the construction site.  A different company hit a gas main earlier this month.
