Water pipe busts, closes lanes of Murfreesboro Pike

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Water gushed from a broken pipe Tuesday night into Wednesday morning on a busy road in Nashville after crews attempted to fix a leak.

Officials told News 2 they began receiving calls of water leaking from underneath the asphalt on Murfreesboro Pike near Rural Hill Road around 7 p.m.

Nearby businesses also reported they had low water pressure.

When crews arrived, they attempted to turn the water off across the street and accidentally hit an unmarked pipe.

Water then began rushing out of the pipe and into a ditch on the side of the road.  At one point, the water was gushing nearly 40 feet into the air.

One lane of westbound traffic on Murfreesboro Pike was closed until around 6 a.m.

One lane of eastbound traffic will remain closed until 8 or 9 a.m. as crews work to turn the water off and repair the busted pipe.

The initial leak was repaired.
