MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Officials are using controlled fires to clean up two state parks in coming days.
The Alabama State Parks Division says it's conducting controlled burns at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham and Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin, weather permitting.
The fires will be started between Wednesday and March 13. The burns will range in size from four acres to 36 acres.
The fires are being used to get rid of pine straw in the campground at Wind Creek. Near Birmingham at Oak Mountain, workers are clearing away sweet gum and pine straw on the golf course.
Officials say the fires also help with the growth of grasses and wildflowers in the parks.
