Words can astonish, cause tears, or send shivers down a person's spine. Ultimate Vocabulary shares three words with its blog readers that make many people tremble with fear: geophagia, trypophobia, and pervicacious.
New York City, NY (PRWEB) February 25, 2014
Vocabulary knowledge is an essential aptitude that makes a person's professional and personal life better. While most people focus on simple words because of their functionality and usefulness in daily life, other people seem to be fascinated by words that describe concepts that verge on the edge of the absurd, or words that cause a trembling of fear or excitement.
eReflect recently published a post titled Dont Be Afraid of These 3 Weird Words! showing how vocabulary knowledge can be a fascinating road that leads linguists into a world of phobias and alternate realities.
One of the three words that can inspire fear is the word "trypophobia," which literally translates to "a fear of holes." Its etymology is Greek; trypophobia is a compound word formed from "trypo," which means "hole," and "phobia" meaning "fear." Trypophobia is the fear of anything that has holes as part of its structure, or that appears to have holds, like a blue-ringed octopus, for instance. This fear of holes is explained as a natural fear reflex to anything that might be poisonous for humans. People feel threatened by plants, situations, and animals that feature holes or circles because this is an attribute often associated with poison, evil, and death. Trypophobia seems to be a very persistent fear in the people afflicted with it, to such an extent that even looking at a block of hole-laden emmental cheese will cause them to break out into a sweat.
The second word eReflect shares with Ultimate Typing readers is "geophagia," which means "eating dirt." This is a habit that is practiced by many birds and animals, as eReflect explains, in which these animals compensate for a diet lacking in essential nutrients by finding important minerals and other nutrients in soil. This hunger for nutrients can be analogous to a hunger for new vocabulary, a hunger that cannot be fully satisfied in many people. A good meal of interesting vocabulary words, though, will make a person more eloquent in expressing their thoughts and feelings.
The third word that make people intimidated is "pervicacious," and eReflect invites all word lovers to look the word up and see if the word does indeed give them a shock.
