Overgrown lot shows no signs of approved drive-in theater

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

An overgrown lot in Murfreesboro shows no signs of the outdoor theater that was approved six months ago.

"Mars Dine-In Drive-In Theater" was expected to be the largest drive-in movie theater in the country, situated on 25 acres in the 4500 block of Florence Road off Old Nashville Highway.

Developer David Stansberry Jr. had plans for two screens with a restaurant and arcade on the former Sky Harbor Airport property.

Movies were to be current releases, played in digital format to avoid the fate of older drive-ins that were forced to shut down this year when film companies stopped distributing movies on 35-millimeter film.

Mars was expected to open May 2014, in time for the release of "Godzilla" remake.

The theater's Web and social media sites do not provide an update on construction.

News 2 has reached out to Stansberry and his attorney for more information, but requests were returned by airtime.
