NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Derek Mason, Vanderbilt University's new head football coach, is about to take his place among the veterans along West End Avenue.

For 22 years, the iconic mural depicting Vanderbilt's coaches has graced the side of the building located at the corner of West End and 28th Avenue.

Mike Cooper, popular around Middle Tennessee for his large-scale murals and founder of Murals and More LLC, is the mural's creator.

Since 1992, each time a coach is replaced, he is paid to update the Nashville-famous wall.

Roger Masson lives in the neighborhood and takes pride in the mural.

"I think it's cool. It's something that tourists always come to see, and people always take pictures of it. I think it's really something special," he said.

Cooper was asked to paint over former coach James Franklin several weeks ago and due to an overwhelming amount of irate phone calls, he is finally putting paint to brick.

Using a headshot of Mason, he did the preliminaries Monday evening.

"Once the paint is dry...it's official," Cooper said.
