Man in critical condition after shooting himself in back

A man was critically injured Monday night after shooting himself in the back.

Rueben Tripp, 39, of Woodlawn, a town located about 8 miles from Clarksville, had been drinking and smoking marijuana before playing with a handgun, The Leaf Chronicle reported.

According to a Montgomery County police report, Tripp said he pulled the hammer back on the pistol and laid it on his couch. He bumped the pistol when he sat on the floor.

The pistol discharged.

Officers arrived at his home and found his wife, Dinah Tripp, covering the wound with a wash cloth. Reuben immediately told officers that it was an accident and his wife did not shoot him.

Dinah, 49, was in another room when the accident occurred.

On Tuesday afternoon, Reuben was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he continues to be in critical but stable condition.

The Montgomery County Police Department is investigating.
