Russell Stover ready for sweet success of Valentine's Day

MANCHESTER, Tenn. -

The day for sweethearts is the sweetest day for Russell Stover in Coffee County.

Located off Interstate 24 in Manchester, the Russell Stover store is stocked full of chocolates of nearly every shape and size year-round, but Valentine's Day is said to be the "Black Friday" of sales for the nation's largest manufacturer of boxed chocolates.

Russell Stover manufactures nearly 100 million pounds of chocolate annually, much of it by hand.

According to the company's Web site, "More than 4,500 Russell Stover employees continue to make candies with the same small-batch techniques and original recipes used by the Stovers more than 80 years ago. Today, most candy making processes are still accomplished by hand."

Planning for the Valentine's Day rush for handmade goodies begins before Christmas.

When asked about the most popular sweet treat, Store Manager Rita Church laughed and said, "Chocolate covered strawberries, most definitely. What woman wouldn't want chocolate covered strawberries on Valentine's [Day]?"

Ripe, red strawberries are hand-dipped in premium milk, white or dark chocolates in the store.

The Manchester location also sells handmade fudge, cookies, cupcakes, and caramel apples, in addition to the aisles of pre-boxed chocolates and ready-made gift baskets.

Russell Stover began in the kitchen of Clara Stover in 1923.

Today, the famous brand is sold in 47 company-owned retails stores and through 70,000 wholesale accounts in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and Australia.

The free-standing store in Manchester is located at 2244 Hillsboro Boulevard.
