GALLATIN, Tenn. -

A man from Gallatin attending school in New Jersey was found beaten to death Saturday morning.

William "Billy" McCaw, 22, was found in the backyard of a residence on Hartwell Street in New Brunswick, N.J. around 10:25 a.m.

An unidentified neighbor called police.  McCaw was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the results of an autopsy are pending, preliminary investigation reveals he suffered blunt force trauma.

McCaw attended Kean University, located about 23 miles north of New Brunswick in Union, N.J.  Police reported he previously attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick and would return to visit friends.

Officers learned he had no connection to the residents of the home where his body was found.

A graduate of Station Camp High School in Gallatin, McCaw was a star soccer player in high school.

"Billy was a completely selfless person and was always smiling and kind. He loved to give people nicknames on the team. I have nothing but good things to say about him. He was hilarious," a friend told News 2.

"Billy was a spontaneous, courageous, outgoing, guy who was always the highlight of every event," another friend said.  "He even made going to school fun because he honestly tried to enjoy every minute of his life to the absolute fullest."

Station Camp's soccer team plans to wear his jersey number, 9, at an upcoming game.

No arrests have been made in McCaw's death.  The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department at 732-745-5217, extension 6028, or Investigator Daniewicz of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at 732-745-4018.
