Man dies in mobile home fire in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

Columbia police are investigating after one person was killed in a fire at a mobile home early Sunday morning.

Officials told News 2 the fire occurred just before 3 a.m. at a home in the 100 block of East 14th Street.

An officer spotted the flames coming from the home and fell through the floor while attempting to rescue the trapped victim.

Fire crews were able to rescue the officer, along with the man inside, who died on his way to the hospital.

While authorities have yet to confirm the victim's identity, a family member told News 2 it is Todd Moser.

Property owner Wesley Hay reported the structure was not used as an occupancy and there were no utilities or smoke detectors present.

Hay told News 2 he saw the victim wandering around his street in recent weeks.

"I didn't know his name, but I did see him a lot," he said, adding, "I don't know why people are staying in empty houses anyways, but I feel terrible that this happened."

The trailer is located on Hay's property behind his home.  He said he doesn't know how he'll pay for the damage or what started the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
