NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

An estimated 6,000 runners laced up their sneakers and braved the cold weather for the Hot Chocolate 5K/15K Saturday morning at Nashville's Bicentennial Mall State Park.

Proceeds fund the Ronald McDonald House Charities' home-away-from-home programs for families of children receiving serious hospital care in the Nashville area.

The event originated in Chicago back in 2008. Since then the race, dubbed America's sweetest, has recruited more than 200,000 participants.

Each race features a 9.3 and 3.1 mile run.  All runners receive a goody bag and of course, hot chocolate.

The Post Race Party features a family friendly kid-zone, hot chocolate and other sweet treats.

Racers crossed the starting line at 7 am.
