Mikal "Coogi" Shakir, 20, was discovered dead Monday afternoon inside a Murfreesboro apartment.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -
Murfreesboro police are still looking for leads in the shooting death of a Middle Tennessee State University student.
Mikal "Coogi" Shakir, 20, was discovered dead Monday afternoon when police responded to a burglary call at the Stones Creek Apartments on Bradyville Pike.
Shakir died from a gunshot wound, police said.
The victim, originally from Antioch, was a sophomore at MTSU majoring in marketing. He dreamed of someday starting his own business, according to those who knew him.
"It's sickening. He was in school trying to become successful. He was on the right path and for someone to take that away from him, it's like why?" Sunni Hickey, a friend of the victim, told Nashville's News 2.
Friends describe Shakir as a happy person who had a smile that could light up a room.
"He always smiled, always could see a smile on his face," said friend Brian Didlake.
A vigil for Shakir was held Tuesday night on MTSU's campus. A walk is being planned for Saturday.
More details will be released as they become available.
