LA VERGNE, Tenn. -

Two suspects are at large following a violent home invasion in La Vergne that sent two to the hospital Thursday night.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Greenwood Drive, just off Old Nashville Highway.

A man sustained a gunshot wound and his wife was badly beaten during the attack.

"It affected his kidneys, liver and spleen, but he's okay. He had surgery last night. The wife is also hurt," neighbor Cheryl Poole told Nashville's News 2.

The victims were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  An update on their conditions was not immediately known.

Nashville's News 2 Poole said she is shocked by Thursday night's terrifying crime.

"It has always been quiet. [We have] never any noise or robberies or anything here for 20 years. We don't know why they were targeted," she said.

The investigation is ongoing. The suspects remain at large.

Anyone with information on the violent crime is urged to call La Vergne police at 615-793-7744.
