Out of control Jeep narrowly misses school full of kids

Posted: Updated:

A Jeep Cherokee narrowly missed crashing into a school building full of children Wednesday afternoon in Columbia.

Officials on the scene told News 2 the driver of the Jeep lost control on Old Zion Road in front of Zion Christian Academy around 1:40 p.m.

The vehicle left the roadway, ramped over a small creek and struck some guy wires on a utility pole before striking the tree.

When the utility pole was shaken, it caused a brief power outage for nearby customers.

Students at Zion Christian Academy were released about 30 minutes late while first responders worked to free the driver from the vehicle.

The Jeep was just feet away from striking the Fifth Grade Academic Building on Zion Christian Academy's campus when it struck the tree and a teacher's car.

About 36 students and some faculty members were in the building.

Only the driver of the Jeep was injured.

Headmaster Don Wahlman told News 2 the incident could have been much worse had the vehicle missed the tree.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

An update on the driver's condition wasn't known.
