Electric companies offer options to customers in need
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
With freezing temperatures sticking around, many Middle Tennesseans are seeing a major increase in their electric bills.
To help customers with their higher than normal bills, the Metro Action Commission has some options to assist those in need.
"It's called the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. It's a federally funded program. And so, if families whose income qualifies them to receive help, and they are Davidson County residents, they can qualify for help with their utility payments," explained Lisa McCrady with the Metro Action Commission.
Residents who would like to apply for help can do so online or by visiting the agency located at 800 2nd Avenue North Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Applications are also available at NES or at Nashville public libraries.
NES also told Nashville's News 2 they are asking anyone who anticipates have difficulties paying their bill to contact them as soon as possible to work out a plan.
Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation is also working with their customers on a case-by-case basis. Customers should call 877-777-9020 for more information.
Piedmont Gas Company added they will work with their customers to spread out payments and have programs such as the Equal Payment Plan.
Last month was the coldest January Middle Tennessee has seen since 1985 and the 15th coldest ever recorded.
