A Rutherford County cold case detective believes a high school teen was killed after she went missing in October of 1999.
Suzanne Videon pulled into her driveway on the evening of October 19, 1999 and didn't see her daughter's car. She said she instantly felt that something was wrong.
"It just started at the top of my head and ran all the way down my feet, like out of the car. I just stopped in the middle of the driveway," Videon said.
She said her 16-year-old daughter, China, was supposed to be home.
Videon explained that about an hour or two earlier, China was getting her hair done at the Just Image hair salon in the Jackson Heights Plaza in Murfreesboro.
China had stopped to say she was going to visit her friend and then she'd be home.
That was the last time anyone saw her.
"You think about, did she suffer? Did she get raped before it happened?" Videon questioned.
For months, the teen's mother said she would drive aimlessly looking for any sign of her daughter.
Eight months later in June 2000, China's car was found abandoned at the South Brook Apartments on Linbar Drive in Nashville. Management had discovered the abandoned car and called police.
The groceries she had purchased the day she disappeared were still inside her car.
Today, China's black Mazda Protégé is still at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office in evidence.
Detective Seargent Dan Goodwin said they didn't find any evidence of a struggle, fingerprints, or any DNA of a possible suspect inside the car.
He believes someone killed her, and that it was someone she knew.
"We have suspects in mind. We just need somebody that can give us some information that will give us something to get those guys," Det. Sgt. Goodwin said.
Videon said China was a good student, a hard worker and her best friend.
"We were really close," the mother said.
China was a junior at Riverdale High School and worked at a grocery store called BI-LO in Murfreesboro. It's now a Publix.
Det. Sgt. Goodwin said they interviewed her friends and her co-workers, which led them to the persons of interest.
He couldn't provide further details, but he's hoping someone with information about the case will come forward.
