Man found dead after shooting sister-in-law at Cookeville church

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -

Authorities are investigating after a woman was shot by a man who then took his own life Sunday morning at a church in Cookeville.

Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls from the Double Springs Community Church located 255 Double Springs Road around 9:05 a.m.

When the Putnam County Sheriff SWAT team arrived, they found Etta Medley, 61, had been shot inside the church.

She was taken to Cookeville Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.  She was last listed in critical condition.

The shooter, identified as 64-year-old Tommy Meadows, was later found in the church's basement dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials reported Medley was caught amidst a domestic situation between Meadows and his wife, who he was separated from at the time of his death.

Meadows allegedly went to the church armed with a firearm to shoot his wife.  A struggle ensued, leading him to shoot Medley instead.

Meadows' wife managed to get away and run from the church.

The investigation is ongoing.
