Three people were killed and five others injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Thursday morning on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard in Hendersonville.
At least four vehicles were involved in the accident which occurred around 2:20 a.m. near the exit for Center Point Road at mile marker 2.
The victims have been identified as 24-year-old Tyler Schultz, 23-year-old Rafael Coto and 24-year-old Heather Clinard.
All three were from Hendersonville.
Four of the five injured were transported to Hendersonville Medical Center and have since been released.
The fifth was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Their condition was not immediately known.
Authorities reported speed was a major factor in the crash and that the driver of a gold Impala rear-ended a Honda Pilot, causing the SUV to lose control and hit a guardrail. The SUV was then struck head-on by a third vehicle.
"When you combine the two, speed and no seatbelts, you have secondary and third impact, that normally does the killing," said Sgt. Mike Germany.
None of the deceased were wearing seatbelts.
The investigation is ongoing. It is unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
