GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

Two EMS first responders almost lost their lives Tuesday while trying to save someone else's.

They were driving down Holder Road in Greene County on their way to respond to a call, when they almost slipped off an embankment  because of the icy roads.

"The ambulance started sliding to the right and slid off the embankment, the only thing that kept the ambulance from rolling over and going over about a 100 foot embankment was a stump," Greene County and Greeneville EMS Director Robert Sayne said.  The ambulance didn't make it to the person in need [Tuesday], but a four wheel drive vehicle did instead.

Sayne said it's not often their ambulances can't get to someone in need because of bad roads, but for the rare instance it happens they have four-wheel drive vehicles.
