Gas bills skyrocket as cold temperatures linger

Posted: Updated:

When the mercury drops, it's only natural that gas bills jump.

The recent cold snaps that have dominated weather headlines in Middle Tennessee have caused home heating bills to soar, but so far there has been no shortage of natural gas.

Piedmont Gas spokesman David Trusty told News 2 the company has reported no shortages and that supplies of natural gas can meet demand.

Trusty also said they've had no problems delivering natural gas to the customers it serves.

Atmos Energy spokeswoman Denise Manning said there is no shortage for its natural gas customers and the company has felt it hasn't been necessary to ask customers to cut back on consumption.

Both companies do suggest that homeowners reduce the use of gas fireplaces and lower the thermostat to help bring down their monthly gas bill.

Natural gas prices are up about 5% over last January's cost, but are much lower than it cost in January of 2012.
