1 dead, 1 injured in shooting at Nashville Elks Lodge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

One person is dead and another injured after a shooting during a birthday party at an Elks Lodge west of downtown Nashville early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened around 1:15 a.m. at the Elks Lodge located at 2614 Jefferson Street.

The man who died in the shooting has been identified as 41-year-old Shondell Martin.

Witnesses told police Martin and the gunman exchanged words prior to the shooting. Martin was shot in the chest. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A 34-year-old man was shot in his shoulder and was being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry.

The suspect is described as a black man who is approximately five feet, eight inches tall. He was wearing a brown jacket over a light gray hooded sweatshirt at the time of the incident.

Officers were looking to see if surveillance cameras in the area showed the gunman.

Police said the shooting occurred during a birthday party.

No further details were immediately released.
