NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

An east Nashville family is counting their blessings after several shots were fired at their home over the weekend.

Metro police said the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Carter Street.

The homeowner, who goes by the name John, told News 2 he was just getting out of his car after returning from work when a white car with at least four occupants pulled up in front of his home.

"I got ready to open my door [and] they started shooting at the house. The first shot, I ducked down in the truck," said John.

John said two passengers in the vehicle fired at least six shots, three of them striking his house.

As soon as the getaway car took off, John quickly ran into this home to check on his wife and children, who slept through the ordeal. He then called 911.

"I'm just grateful. [I] thank God that my kids didn't get hit or my wife," said John.

John said it appears the alleged shooters targeted the wrong home and suspect it is a case of mistaken identity.

"Come to find out there's another dude who got the same name as my son," he told Nashville's News 2.

Residents like Hannah Deal said they are not shocked about this recent incident.

"Around here people shooting all the time, fighting police coming through here," said Deal.

John said there has to be a more civil way to overcome differences.

"I've did a lot of stuff in my days. I'm not going to shoot someone's house up for what," said John

The investigation is ongoing.
