The choir at Dickson County High School is a few weeks away from a scheduled performance at New York's famed Carnegie Hall, but they need your help.
The students have been raising money for over a year with the ultimate goal of $140,000. Now they are just $5,000 away from reaching their goal of making it all the way to the Big Apple on February 16.
The performance idea came from a former student of Dr. Cindy Freeman, who has worked at Dickson County High for over 40 years.
Dr. Gerald Gray is the director of choral activities at the State University of New York in Fredonia.
"He was asked to conduct at Carnegie Hall and he said, ‘Well, I would like for my college choir, university choir, and I would like for Dickson County High School concert choir to do it,'" Dr. Freeman explained.
She continued, "We got the message and got the invitation and accepted and we're on our way."
In an effort to raise the remaining funds, they are hosting a basketball challenge Friday night.
"Tonight we are asking people if they would like to make a contribution of $5 or more," Dr. Freeman said.
For that $5, contributors will get the opportunity to make four shots with the basketball in 25 seconds: a lay-up, a free throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot.
If someone actually completes the four shots in 25 seconds, they will win $25,000.
To participate in tonight's basketball challenge and fundraising event, head to Dickson County High School located at 509 Henslee Drive in Dickson.
