LEBANON, Tenn. -

A man found guilty of killing a puppy has been sentenced to two years of supervised probation.

David Matson was arrested in November 2012 and charged with aggravated animal cruelty for bludgeoning a puppy to death with a tire iron.

Matson was found guilty of the crime last November.

During sentencing Thursday, Assistant District Attorney Tom Swink asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence which would've included prison time.

Matson's attorney, however, said he was a candidate for alternative sentencing, saying he has tried to address his problems.

The judge ultimately gave Matson probation time, citing the fact that he has no prior arrests and considers him a "standard offender."

Matson, however, was warned that he may never own a pet or come into contact with animals.
