2-story home damaged, pets killed in Columbia fire

Posted:
COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

While the residents are safe after a duplex caught fire in Columbia early Thursday morning, several pets died in the blaze.

Firefighters arrived at 1 a.m. to heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story building in the 1600 block of Highland Avenue.

Crews began attacking the fire on the first floor and conducting a sweep of the second floor.

A flashover occurred, which is a near-simultaneous reigniting of the fire, putting the crew in danger.

Firefighters had to exit the home due to the extreme conditions.

The house suffered heavy fire and water damage.

It is unclear how many pets lost their lives.
