NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

There was a huge show of support for Vanderbilt University's football team on campus Saturday morning.

More than 100 fans gathered outside the McGugin Center where coach James Franklin met with players to inform them he accepted the head coaching position at Penn State.

Darrin Moss was the first fan in line at 6:30 a.m.  He learned about the gathering on Twitter.

"One person said, 'Wouldn't it be neat if we all rallied at Star Walk this morning and showed the team we were behind them?' From there, within 30 minutes, it went crazy," Moss told News 2.

Moss drove from White House to attend.

Fans wore black and gold, chanted and cheered as players entered the building.

Franklin arrived 20 minutes before the meeting, but did not address Vandy fans.  Inside, he told players he had accepted the job at Penn State.

Fans outside learned about his decision on social media.

"Honestly, I can't really blame the man. He had to do whatever he had to do for his family and whatever is best for him," said graduate Claudia Garcia.

While she is sad to see Franklin go, Garcia says she appreciates what he did for the football program at Vanderbilt University.

"James Franklin did a really great job of building this program, making Vandy relevant again in the SEC," Garcia stated.

Fans are now eager to hear who will take his place.

"Anybody who is dedicated to Vanderbilt. That's all I really want to see," said Garcia.

"I wish him well, but this team will not miss a beat. These boys believe they can win, they know how to win, Vandy is here to stay," said Moss.

Fans said the gathering was less about the coach and more about supporting the team.

Franklin departed for Penn State following the meeting.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson and Director of Athletics Dave Joyner will officially announce Franklin as their head coach in a new conference Saturday afternoon.
