Murfreesboro mosque wins approval to expand cemetery

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A Murfreesboro mosque has won approval to expand a cemetery on the property.

The Rutherford County Board of Zoning Appeals voted 3-2 Wednesday night to approve a special exception for the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro for the establishment of a cemetery.

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro's Chairman of the Board Essam Fathy told News 2 it's not known when more burials will proceed on the grounds.

The cemetery is private and only congregation members will be buried on site. One person has already been buried there.

More improvements to the facility are planned.

Once again, vocal opposition was on hand Wednesday night for the three-hour discussion at the board meeting.

A vote on the issue was deferred in December until traffic and contamination studies could be conducted. Mosque leadership says traffic will not be affected by burials on the site.

The cemetery is just the latest part of the property that has been opposed by some residents in Rutherford County.

At the December meeting residents voiced concern that bodies buried on the property would contaminate the water.

Chairman Fathy said the burials are safe and carry less risk than most traditional burials in the area.
