Greenbrier mayor keeps title, loses power amid theft investigation
Mayor Billy Wilson
GREENBRIER, Tenn. -
Monday night, the Greenbrier Board of Mayor and Alderman met and announced Mayor Billy Wilson will remain as acting mayor.
The board did, however, pass an ordinance that reassigns some of his duties, including his purchasing and approval authorities.
Mayor Wilson is charged with taking and using an estimated $60,000 from the local Toys for Tots program for personal gain.
The organization's president, Ann Mayes, previously said the group supports the mayor, and that the investigation against him is simply a misunderstanding.
"Mayor Wilson loves Toys for Tots, and since there is an investigation and he can't do Toys for Tots, Greenridge Civitans is going to continue with the program. We totally support Billy Wilson," Mayes said.
When asked for a comment regarding Monday's meeting, the mayor replied with "no comment."
He has been mayor in Greenbrier since 2004. He also serves as fire chief.
