Tips to protect your home, water pipes during winter weather

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
As you prepare for the winter storm to roll in, don't forget to protect your home. There are some steps you can take that can save you hundreds of dollars.

Bruce Williams with Wheeler Incorporated says open your cabinets so that warm air can get to your pipes and make sure to turn on at least one faucet to a drip.

"If you want to drip all three or all four whatever you can it's worth a little bit of water bill to do it," Williams explained to Nashville's News 2.

He added that you can also wrap your pipes with insulation, otherwise they may freeze or bust. Williams says in that situation you want to cut off your water line immediately.

You also want to protect you home on the outside. If you have a crawl space or basement that has vents, make sure to close them and don't forget about your spigots.

"Make sure you unhook all of your hoses and you can buy these covers at your local hardware store for just a couple of dollars," said Williams.

If you find yourself with frozen pipes, it's best to leave the solution to the professionals. Wheeler Incorporated is open 24-7.
