MONTEREY, Tenn. -

Three men were arrested for theft and reckless endangerment after a witness spotted them stealing a guard rail in Putnam County.

The Herald Citizen reported the witness called authorities after seeing the men walking along Stamp Shady Grove Road, pulling up the guardrail and loading it onto a truck.

Authorities could not locate the suspects in the area, so they called a scrap metal company in Overton County and told them to be on the lookout.

About 40 minutes later, the individuals pulled across the scale at the scrap metal company, who then notified authorities.

The suspects were identified as 27-year-old Jason Abston, 33-year-old Tony Hite, and 37-year-old Joey Cantrell.

Cantrell allegedly told officers they were bringing the metal "that the highway department gave him months ago" from his grandmother's house.

Another man reportedly stated, "I am not saying that we stole the guard rails, but we were to split the money with Cantrell."

The metal would have gotten the men around $46.

They were arrested and charged with theft and reckless endangerment since the guard rail was supporting the road.

They were given a $10,000 bond each.
