Winter weather brings boost in business for private companies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

While the Tennessee Department of Transportation takes care of public roadways during winter weather, many businesses contract private companies to take of their parking lots and driveways.

Ahead of the possible snow Thursday, TDOT crews started prepping roadways earlier this week.

"We started brining in Middle Tennessee, specifically Davidson and Williamson counties, on Monday of this week," spokesperson Deanna Lambert told News 2.

Crews have pre-treated major interstates and bridges and overpasses with a brine solution, and more trucks will be out on the roadways again first thing Thursday morning.

But not everyone cringes at the thought of ice and snow.

While the highway crews handle hundreds of miles of roadway, private companies work on a smaller scale.

Smart Scape LLC in Nashville holds contracts not just for commercial landscaping, but also for snow and ice removal.

Manager David Schmutz said the snow and ice removal can be a boost in business in a normally slow time of year.

"You don't budget for snow and ice removal," Schmutz said. "But when it comes, it definitely helps out."

Smart Scape will have crews out at malls, hospitals and office buildings Thursday morning to pre-treat parking lots and driveways.
