Fire forces evacuation at Donelson hotel

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Donelson hotel was evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to a fire in one of the rooms.

Firefighters responded to the SpringHill Suites on Airport Center Drive near the Nashville International Airport around 12:40 p.m.

Smoke and flames were visible from a fourth floor window.

Firefighters entered the hotel and quickly extinguished the fire, which originated in room No. 405.

The hotel's sprinkler system went off after the fire began, causing widespread water damage.

About 40 guests and staff at the hotel were evacuated.

Many of the hotel guests came from out of town to take part in Nashville's New Years celebration.

Christina Williams and her family, from Ontario Canada, were shocked when they were told by hotel employees to evacuate their room.

"We went and sat down and had something to eat and then she just came out and yelled that there was a fire so she kind of told us to get out of the hotel."

No one was injured.

Roads in the area were closed while fire crews were on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
