DYERSBURG, Tenn. -

Residents of Dyersburg woke to find their horse had been shot and killed Thursday morning.

The State Gazette reported The Dyer County Sheriff's Office is now investigating the animal's death after the owners called from their home in the 400 block of Parker Road.

The couple reported to police they found their three-year-old white and tan Appaloosa horse dead from a single gunshot wound above the left eye between 8 and 9 a.m.

The horse was most likely killed between Midnight and the early morning hours Thursday.

Authorities also believe a poacher may be responsible for the death, and may have mistaken it for wildlife.

The Appaloosa is valued at over $2,500.
