HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -

A 20-year-old Hendersonville man is behind bars in Sumner County after police found three Molotov cocktails in his car and 13 more at his home.

Tanner Buchanan, 20, was pulled over for suspicion of DUI in Hendersonville Saturday night.  Police found three Molotov cocktails in a backpack in his car.

Buchanan told police he had more devices at his parent's house where he lives.

Officers searched the home and found 13 additional explosive devices.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to both locations and rendered the devices safe.

"He said he used them for protection," Hendersonville Police Detective Sergeant Jim Vaughn said. "He didn't carry guns; this was his method of protection."

Det. Sgt. Vaughn did not know why Buchanan felt the need for such protection.

"It could have been extremely dangerous," Det. Sgt. Vaughn said. "You have13 Molotov cocktails inside a home, it would have been extremely dangerous for the folks inside the home."

Monday, Buchanan's father told News 2 he didn't know his son had explosives in his home and was shocked to learn of his arrest.

"Utter amazement," John Buchanan said. "I believe my son is a good kid and I don't have an explanation."

He continued, "I am greatly confused, saddened and deeply embarrassed by this."

Buchanan said his son was raised in a good home, attended church and works a regular job.

"I wish I could say something that makes a lot of sense, but I can't," he said. "He is going to be punished and he should be punished. You don't do things like that without repercussions."

The FBI has interviewed Tanner Buchanan but agents have not said if they will seek federal charges against him.

According to police, he is being cooperative with investigators.

All of the Molotov cocktails were destroyed by authorities after being rendered safe by THP's bomb squad.

Tanner Buchanan is charged with four counts of possessing prohibited weapons, DUI, possession of marijuana and violating the implied consent law.

He was booked into the Sumner County jail on $300,000 bond and is due in court in February.
