LOBELVILLE, Tenn. -

Two buildings were destroyed in a fire at a rubber plant in Perry County Saturday morning.

The fire started around 2:30 a.m. at Bates Rubber Plant on 2nd Avenue East in Lobelville.

Perry County Dispatch told News 2 that two buildings at the plant "have been lost" in the fire and firefighters had to work to keep the blaze from spreading to an area where rubber materials are stored.

Area residents were evacuated as a precaution but have since been allowed to go back home.

Lobelville Mayor Robby Moore told News 2 fire departments from Lobelville, Pine View, and Linden assisted in battling the large blaze.

He said the plant should be in operation again on Thursday, adding that it was a good thing since Bates Rubber is the largest employer in Perry County.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and no further details were immediately released.
