NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro police are investigating a woman's report of self-defense after a man was fatally shot at a Bellevue apartment complex early Saturday morning.

The shooting occurred at 3:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of River Road at the Hallmark at Bellevue Apartments.

According to police, Anderous Reid, 39, was shot by his girlfriend Jessica Cothon, 29.

Cothon said that Reid was physically attacking her in a bedroom when she retrieved her pistol and fired. Reid was shot in the midsection and died at the scene.

The couple's two children, a 3-year-old girl, 6-year-old boy, Cothon's 11-year-old daughter and his mother were also at the home during the time of the shooting. Police said the children were taken to their grandmother's home.

No charges are being placed against Cothon at present. Police said Cothon was fully cooperative with detectives and the case file will be sent to the District Attorney's Office for review at the conclusion of the investigation.

Neighbors tell Nashville's News 2 they are surprised and that the apartment community is tight-knit.

"I had no idea and then I came out to get my paper and here was the news all over and I could tell by the first responders that were here and the type of vehicles that were here that something tragic had occurred," Rogers explained.

Reid was arrested for domestic-related felony aggravated assault in January stemming from a December fight with Cothon during which she said Reid strangled her, slammed her head to the floor and kicked her. Officers responded to the hospital, interviewed Cothon and swore out the aggravated assault warrant on her behalf due to her decision not to prosecute Reid.

The aggravated assault charge was dismissed in General Sessions Court in October.

Reid was arrested for domestic-related felony aggravated assault in March 2007 after Cothon reported Reid had beaten her head against concrete, hit her with a broom and attempted to burn her with a lighter. Reid was convicted in that case of misdemeanor assault and received a sentence of eleven months and 29 days.

Records reflect that Reid was convicted of attempted murder in 1994 and received an eight-year sentence.

He also received an eight-year sentence for a 2003 felony cocaine arrest and a two-year sentence for being a convicted felon in possession of a gun in the 2003 case.
