4 families displaced in Antioch apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

Four families are without a home just two days before Christmas following an apartment fire Monday morning in Antioch.

The fire began around 11:40 a.m. at the Meadowood Village Apartments on Rice Road off Rural Hill Road and Murfreesboro Pike.

Nashville District Fire Chief Jim Norman told News 2 the fire started in a downstairs apartment.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to that unit but the entire building suffered smoke damage.  A total of four units are uninhabitable.

Chief Norman said several children live in the building and his firefighters, many of them parents themselves, did what they could to preserve Christmas presents.

All of the residents were out of the building by the time firefighters arrived however, several residents who live upstairs had to jump from a window to escape.

Two Good Samaritans who live in the area assisted. No injuries were reported.

A cigarette could be what sparked the blaze although the exact cause is under investigation.
