New crime lab to open next month in Nashville

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A state-of-the-art crime lab is set to open early next year in Nashville.

Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson told The Tennessean that the facility will have space for DNA testing, forensic analysis of weapons and ammunition, drug identification and testing for toxicology.

Much of the testing that will be done in the new lab beginning next month is currently done by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which does evidence testing for agencies statewide.

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm says the lab is the first of its kind for a local agency, and it wasn't clear how the lab would affect the workload of the state agency.

City officials said they hope local testing will lead to faster results, smoother prosecutions and more crime prevention.
