A death row inmate convicted of murder in Shelby County died Wednesday morning of natural causes.
The Tennessee Department of Correction said Michael Wayne Howell was pronounced dead at the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility in Nashville just after 10 a.m.
Howell, 54, was sentenced to death on October 26, 1989 for the 1987 murder of Alvin Kennedy, a Memphis convenience store clerk.
Howell was also convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death in Oklahoma for the November 2, 1987 shooting death of Sgt. Charlene Calhoun.
